Is this the new marketing ploy being utilized by mobile device manufacturers? The latest RIM clamshell has broken cover, and the BlackBerry 9670 is certainly distinctive. The chubby folder was spotted by the gang over at BGR, and not only is the first OS 6.0 device we’ve seen, but the first BlackBerry to have a 5-megapixel camera.
There’s also CDMA connectivity – tipping a Verizon or Sprint launch – along with WiFi, Bluetooth and a microUSB port. Storage is via microSD card, and there’s both a large external color display and a 360 x 480 internal screen above a full QWERTY keyboard and optical trackpad.
No word on when we could see it launch, but we’re hoping RIM go through a few more design revisions just to knock out some of the excess ugly. Right now, with the keyboard looking like it was simply pried off a regular BlackBerry and slotted in, the whole thing seems a little Frankenstein’s monster for our liking.

BLACKBERRY 9670: Outside of the Blackberry Pearl Flip, Blackberries have been rectangular, open-face gadgets. Mine has a horrible habit of pocket-dialing all my contacts at the most inopportune times.
Soon, Blackberry buyers will have one more flip option to consider and a new way to protect against the dreaded pocket-dial: the 9670. The 9670 is a full Qwerty with flip-up 360 x 480 internal display and large-scale external display. Other features include a 5-MP camera, Wi-Fi, microUSB port, microSD expansion and Bluetooth. RIM continues its new direction with an optical trackpad instead of the ol’ trackball.
There’s no indication at this early stage in the game on when exactly we can expect this phone to hit the market, but it’s good to see RIM adding a new form factor to the ever-popular Blackberry series. More on this one when it comes. Until then skip to the gallery for a couple of other looks
