New Sony Ericsson W980i Walkman Phone:
“The W980 Walkman phone really sets a new standard for music on your phone,” said Ben Padley, Head of Music Marketing, at Sony Ericsson. “We wanted to design a leading music player that we could combine with a feature-packed phone, all the while pioneering an audio experience that always left you wanting more. The W980 will surpass all expectations.”
According to the company, “The Walkman on Top feature on the W980 gives you the full functionality of a Walkman player without even having to open your phone. The entire Walkman player that would normally be displayed on the inside of your clamshell is also replicated on the outside of the phone, so navigation through your music library is effortless.
Sony Ericsson brings superb W980i
Sony Ericsson is deepening her quality, design and user experience further and further. When it comes to design, Sony Ericsson pulls the some Asian brands legs and knows how to combine all strong points of the European Japanese company and to use them in order to come to a new phone. Tonight in Barcelona the well-known Sony Ericsson Walkman range was expanded with the Sony Ericsson W980i, a very well-designed, very slim, shiny and shimmering clamshell with all the important keys - even when closed - within hand reach.
The design of the Sony Ericsson W980i can at least be described as distinctive. The entirily black device seems to look like a mirror from a distance, but up-close the device looks deep black. Sony Ericsson knows how to play with shapes, something that cmes back in the keys of the W980i. These keys playfully break the tight and somewhat square design of the W980i. Due to the clamshell shape, Sony Ericsson has realized a 2.2 inch display on one hand and a userfriendly numbered keyboard and function keys on the other hand.
Above the display a distinctive see-through plexi-glass strip is placed. At first sight this looks like a simple decoration of the device, so the walkman logo can be seen trough the outsides of the device. However, something that can only be seen when using the device, this plexi-glass strip is regularly enlighted with a bright white light, due to which the device gets surprising effects.
The outsides of the Sony Ericsson W980i are also very special. The entire device seems to reflect and only the round bubbles at the front give away that there is more than meets the eye. As soon as the musicplayer or other functions of the phone are started with the "hidden" keys, htese keys light up in white or orande and a second display appears out of nowhere. With the keys at the outside of the clamshell, the musicplayer can be operated without opening the device. The display at the panel directly gives the same information as the user can see at the internal display. For a little extra userfriendliness, this device has also received ShakeControl with which you do not even have to touch any keys in order to skip a track...
Than the technical side
Of course, the design is very important, but the compact looks of the Sony Ericsson W980i equip a lot of functionality. The main point here is music. New in a walkman phone is the "FM tuner". With this FM tuner, music can be sent from the phone to every FM receiver. This can be a car radui or a tuner at home, that does not matter and no extra connections are needed. All FM receivers withing a circle of 15 meters will be able to pick up the signal of the W980i.
Whenever there is no car radio or FM receiver within reach, music can also be played very clearly with the stereo phone speakers. Improving sound is possible with the expanded equalizer with eight pre-programmed settings. But music is nothing without a decent storage capacity. Despite of the device not looking that expanded, the W980i offers 8 gigabyte of memory capacity.
Besides these new functions, the W980i also offers an FM radio with RDS, the "SensMe" application, with which the phone plays music that is focused on your mood, the famous "TrackID" and album-art, with which covers of CDs are visible when you listen to them.
More then only music...
Despite the W980i being so compact and that it actually has to be full with only the music functions, Sony Ericsson has managed to put more into this do-it-all. The device is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera, a level sensor, with which the phone automatically rotates to the direction in which it is held and expanded internet and e-mail possibilities with help of GPRS, UMTS and even HSDPA.
